Hair Treatments - Which One is Right for You?

Too many treatments too little time to make sense of all the options?  Every year more and more hair treatments are introduced into the industry.  Learn about hair treatment basics with this great list to get you started.


1.  Treatment for Damaged Hair - Protein
Hair is made up mostly of proteins with the outer layer of the hair (cuticle) resembling shingles on a roof.  When the cuticle becomes damaged it exposes the inner layer (cortex) to styling and environmental damage.  To repair the hair a protein treatment is often used.  The protein fills and strengthens areas of the cuticle that have been damaged by wear and tear.  Beware of using too much protein though.  Since protein is a strengthener it can make the hair very hard which will make it more prone to breakage. Protein treatments should be used no more that once every 2 weeks and hair products that contain protein should be used no more than 2-3 time a week.


2.  Treatment for Smooth Hair - Keratin
The protein that hair is made up of is called Keratin.  Many keratin treatments have recently come out on the market making it a very talked about and popular service.  Keratin smooths the outer layer of the hair, creating a barrier between the hair's cuticle and outside forces such as weather.  A keratin treatmen leaves the hair smoother than it was before but doesn't affect the disulfide bonds.  This treatment usually lasts 3-5 months depending on the hair's texture.


3.  Treatment for Dry Hair - Moisture
Moisture is the way to go when addressing dry hair.  Hair becomes dry before it gets damaged, so stop damage in it's tracks with a moisture treatment.  If hair is lacking moisture it becomes hairder to style, frizzier and loses shine.  There's no way to overdose on moisture but keep in mind a clients texture.  If their hair is very fine, too many moisture treatments can leave it limp and greasy.
